Welcome to new member Joan Evans Hayslip, a resident of Dublin, OH, who joined WSCO around the time of our Gymanfa. Joan is a cousin of board member Ken Evans.
We get to welcome Richard Cartwright back to the WSCO family. The Gahanna resident noted on his membership application that he was a member in the 1970's.
To you both, Croeso! (Welcome)
Ann Gillard, CWSS director, has been plagued since mid-December by a pulled back muscle. She said she tried “better living with chemistry” but that didn’t resolve the pain – she just didn’t care about it. Visits to a chiropractor finally gave her some relief but she continued to have a difficult time. We hope that by the time Dragon Tales hits her mailbox Ann will be much better and will be joining our St. David’s Day celebrations.
Board members Charlotte and Stanton Prior missed our October Gymanfa because they were on a one-week cruise with another couple. The happy travelers went from New York to Halifax, Nova Scotia, with a number of stops that included Boston, Newport, Bar Harbor, and St. John, New Brunswick.
David Jones says his trip to Wales and London in early December was lots of fun. He spent some time with Matt Barry, while Matt’s wife Beth was with her parents, and they drove up to St. David’s from Cardiff and spent the night. Beth is pregnant – a boy and they have chosen a name -- but Matt, “with his ‘boyish’ sense of humor” as David says, refers to the unborn child as Bump. Matt, Beth, and Bump sent their best wishes to all WSCO members for the new year.
WSCO Membership Chairs, Pam and Evan Jones, were off to Pasadena for the 2010 Rose Bowl Parade and Rose Bowl Game. They traveled with Evan’s sister, WSCO life member Judith Kreeger, and her husband, and stayed with Pam’s sister and brother-in-law, who live in Simi Valley. Highlights of the trip were watching the floats being built; tailgating at 6a.m. for the 8a.m. parade, again before the football game, and yet again afterwards for the victory celebration; and seeing the floats up close the day after the parade.
Pam and Evan say that a must-see is the Reagan Presidential Library and spectacular Air Force One Pavilion in Simi Valley.
William Bebb Jones died, Sunday, August 23, 2009. Born September 5, 1926 in Bexley, OH, he served in the US Navy after graduating from Bexley High School in 1944, graduated from OSU, and worked as vice-president of a lumber company and as owner of Doddington Millwork. Bill was especially proud of his 100% Welsh heritage and was raised at Miami Ave. Presbyterian Church where the foundations for WSCO were started. Any who knew him loved his quick wit, his endless stories, the twinkle in his eye and his sly grin.
Life member, former board member and president, Barbara Lee Clark, age 70, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, October 3, 2009, following a brief illness. A long-time resident of the west side of Columbus, she graduated from West High School, 1957, Capital University, 1961, and Kent State University (MLS), and was retired from the Columbus Metropolitan Library system. She is very much missed by her half-sister Lisa, several cousins, numerous close friends, her dog Jack, and her cat Gypsy.
Our sincere condolences go out to both families.
Gene Beard let us know that, in a Christmas note, Kara Lewis, former Director of the Madog Center for Welsh Studies, sent greetings to her WSCO friends.
