St. David’s Day Celebrations

St David’s Day Celebration at Worthington Hills Country Club

Mary Ellen Morgan

This year’s WSCO St. David’s Day celebrations will have a Welsh-filled day featuring the songs, tales, seminars and charm of Sioned Angharad Wyn of Whitchurch, Wales

Our celebration will take place on Saturday, February 27, 2010, in the ballroom of the beautiful Worthington Hills Country Club, 920 Clubview Boulevard South, Columbus, Ohio 43235.  Directions and a map are on page 8.

The menu will feature a choice of either Pan Seared Lake Erie Walleye, drizzled with Chive Cream Sauce, or Herb Crusted Pork Loin.  Both meals include Potato Leek Soup, Au Gratin Potatoes, Hericot Verts (green beans),  Pecan Ball wrapped in Pecans and Topped with Hot Fudge, Assorted Rolls and Butter, and Coffee, Decaf, Tea, Iced Tea or Lemonade.

The cost for either adult meal is $23.00.  Children’s meals (for those ages 10 and under) are available -- the entrée can be chosen at lunchtime.  For WSCO members, the first child can eat free as a guest of WSCO, and all subsequent children of that same member can eat for only $6 (half of the regular $12 price).

All meal prices include lunch, a 20% gratuity, and an after-lunch presentation on The Differences Between Welsh and English in the Mabinogion presented by Sioned Wyn, with an Ysgol Gân afterwards led by Sioned and accompanied by our own John Davids.

There will be two seminars and the Annual Meeting before lunch.  Seminars are $5 per person.  Registration opens at 9:15a.m. and lunch will be at noon.

The raffle returns to this year's program and will be, again, a "choose your prize" raffle where five winners will be able to choose among available prizes.  The Dragon Drawing winners will be announced between dessert and the singing.  Tickets will be $2 each or 3 for $5.

A registration form is here.  Please return with payment by Monday, Feb. 22, 2010 to reserve your meal/s.

A schedule of the day’s program and more information continues on page 4.

March 1st at the Ohio Statehouse

Ken Evans

Our 2010 St. David's Day festivities will end on Monday, March 1, with the FLAG raising at the Ohio Statehouse in downtown Columbus, the SE corner of High & Broad Streets. Meet at 11:40 am on the West plaza or just inside the West doors. We will raise the Welsh flag at noon and sing our Welsh and American National anthems and a few Welsh hymns. There will be TOURS available.

Our tour of RHODES STATE OFFICE TOWER will begin soon after the flag raising -- meet in the 5-story entrance lobby, 30 E. Broad Street [across Broad from the statehouse].  We will begin the tour at 1:00pm.

This is the tallest building in central Ohio, with 1.2 million sq. ft., and houses the state treasurer and attorney general along with many state departments. Opened in 1974, the building was named for James A. Rhodes, who was governor for 4 terms, 1963-1979. This is one of the largest granite structures in the world; each carnelian red granite panel weighs 450 pounds. There are art exhibits in the lobby the year around. Some of us will be arriving via the underground passageway from the statehouse.

The STATEHOUSE tour is another option. There are regular tours every hour between 10:00 am - 3:00 pm weekdays. So, if you go at 11:00, you could take part in the noon flag raising and the Rhodes State Office Tower Tour. Meet at the 3rd Street entrance to the Senate Building [attached to the east side of the Statehouse] just before 11:00 am. http://www.statehouse.state.oh.us.

Personally invite your state representative/senator, relatives, friends, and neighbors to our flag-raising.
