During the opening of the 60th Annual WSCO Gymanfa (2008), Mary Ellen Morgan graciously presented “Welshman of the Year” to Myron Cherry for his cheerful, steady and long service to our society. Myron is only the fourth person -- preceded by Floe Jones, Marian Davis, and Peggy Morgan Speakman -- and the only man to receive this coveted award from the Society. During her remarks, Mary Ellen noted Myron's many contributions to the Welsh Society, both seen and unseen, as he quietly and effectively brings all details for the Gymanfa venue into harmony and synchronization every year. 'We know we can leave all the details of the church arrangements to Myron, and it will be done and done well,' said Mary Ellen. Perhaps Myron's greatest legacy, I believe, has been bringing his family into the Welsh 'fold.' I recall many years ago, when our Gymanfaoedd were still held at First Baptist Church on Broad Street -- there was a year when Myron had asked his daughters to usher. This was during the era of 'Boy George' the heavily made-up singer, and the girls |

were suitably attired for teenagers of that era. I'm sure there were probably a few raised eyebrows that day, but the important part is that they were there. And they continue to be there at the Columbus Gymanfaoedd to this day. Not too many years ago, Myron attended the Gymanfa Ganu in Venedocia for the first time in his life and at the end he declared, 'I've got to get Diana here.' Now she comes with Myron every year. Whether he's growing his hair out to donate, losing weight, or working with his son in the aquatics business, Myron's focus is always on making things better. The Welsh Society of Central Ohio is lucky to have his positive spirit and steady presence among the membership as he continues to serve in many ways and means. Editor’s Note: Myron was a member of the Miami Ave. Presbyterian Church where many of WSCO’s founders also attended services and, when the church closed, Myron saw to it that the church records were donated to the Welsh-American Heritage Museum in Oak Hill, Ohio. |
