Croeso to Welsh InternSioned Wyn is the new Welsh intern at the Madog Center for Welsh Studies, University of Rio Grande, Rio Grande, Ohio, and director Jeanne Jones Jindra is thrilled. Sioned, who is from Whitchurch, a small suburban village north of Cardiff, started work on June 22nd and her duties include promoting the Madog Center and Wales in the community and talking in schools in the area about Wales and the work that the Madog Center does. Welsh is her first language and she received all her education through the medium of Welsh up until she studied for her master’s degree. She went to school in Cardiff and then to Aberystwyth University, where she earned her undergraduate degree and her Master’s in Management and Marketing. |

Sioned heard about the Welsh intern job from a friend who had decided to not apply for it, got the application form one day before the submission deadline and, after a video interview, was offered the job. She loves to sing and is a member of Côr Caerdydd (Cardiff Choir), has traveled extensively with the award-winning choir, and is sad to be missing an upcoming trip to Romania. Sioned says, “Apart from the singing, which is a big part of my life, I love to cook and read and of course, being Welsh, socializing with my friends! I have previously done many varied and different jobs; I’ve worked with a catering company that catered for film crews on location across South Wales; in a deli; as a runner for a television company; for the National Eisteddfod of Wales; in a Welsh language initiative in Cardiff; an Office manager for a food consultancy and been a cook in a pub in Aberystwyth. I’ve already met so many different people and look forward to meeting many more and enjoying the rest of my year here in Rio Grande!” |

I hope you are all continuing to visit our website at www.welshsocietyofcentralohio.org to learn of interesting tidbits regarding the Welsh news we link to on the website as well as WSCO news items and the Welsh Singing Society’s busy schedule.
We've recently adapted the Music Pages from WSCO’s original website, reorganized them to make the Welsh titles easier to locate, and added an index to help you easily cross reference Welsh titles if you know only the English name. You can find our music page by clicking on the link near the top of our Links page. Once there you will find nearly three dozen Welsh hymns and traditional songs in Midi format that you can listen to while reading the Welsh and/or English lyrics.
We do our best to plan ahead for WSCO events so members have plenty of notice – our annual events are announced in this newsletter. But occasionally the opportunity comes up quickly for something special – as did the April 2008 and 2009 events with the Trinity exchange students – and an email notice was sent out.
If you’ve never received an email message with the subject “From WSCO of possible interest”, then we may not have your email address. If you want to receive email notices from WSCO, please write to info(at)welshsocietyofcentralohio(dot)org (let us know if you prefer that your address not be published in the annual Member Roster).
Although we send out periodic email messages with news of Welsh-oriented events that may be of interest to our members, we do not flood your inbox.
For those with no email or who access your messages somewhere other than your own home (maybe the library or a relative’s house), we are thinking of starting a telephone tree for only short-notice WSCO-sponsored events. We can’t make any promises at this time – it’s only an option under consideration. We’ll keep you updated.
Board meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month, except for July, August and December, from 7 to 9 pm and usually take place at the Glenwood United Methodist Church, 2833 Valleyview Dr. (at Hague Ave.) Columbus, Ohio, in room 4.
Meetings are open to all adult WSCO members. Anyone wishing to put an item on the agenda should contact a board member.
For board member information, call (614) 470-4999 and leave your name and number for a call back, or email info(at)welshsocietyofcentralohio(dot)org.
