Member Highlights

Karen Rice, daughter of life members Jeanne and Howard Rice of Dayton, telephoned from California to let us know that both her parents have died – Jeanne last August and Howard in March of this year.  Our condolences go out to the Rice family.

WSCO members Tamara and Ruth Ann Evans and their sister Tina lost their mother, Madge B. Evans, age 93, on April 6th.  Our prayers are with the Evans sisters during this difficult time.

Life member Lillian Brownfield died May 20th – her life was filled with the joys of family, hard work, the pursuit of social justice, and the beauty of nature.  Lillian and members of her family have been active members of WSCO throughout the years.

Welcome Wagon

WSCO gets to say Croeso!! (Welcome!!) to many new members in this issue.

Rose Mary S. Rudy, whose father was Welsh, joined just before our St. David’s Day celebrations.

Hilliard resident, Betsy Cowles joined the first week of March.

Later in March we balanced the women by adding two men to our roster: Steve Williams lives in Johnstown and Jason Morgan lives in Blacklick and was the “inspiration” for the rugby article in the last newsletter.

Besides selling Lancaster Celtic Gathering t-shirts for the organizing group, our treasurer Teg Lantz hustled WSCO memberships at the mid-May festival and we get to welcome Dawn Gray, Stephanie Ott, and Daniel Jones.

John Evans picked up a membership application at that same festival and mailed his dues in, so we’ll just give credit to the entire booth crew.

The first week of June, Daniel Roberts, a CWSS member, joined WSCO the night of their chorus rehearsal.

We are very glad to have all of these folks with us – be sure to look for them and introduce yourself at WSCO events.

Maternity Ward

Proud grandparents, Louis and Jeanne Jones Jindra, welcomed Reid Patrick Miller on December 12th.  Reid is the son of their daughter Megan and her husband Eric and the brother of 5-year-old Trey, all of Jackson.  Reid’s Tad-cu is Edwin Jones of Jackson.  (tad-cu means “grandfather” and, although Edwin is Jeanne’s father, Megan’s grandfather, and Reid’s great-grandfather, Jeanne says they all call him Tad-cu.)

Pam Jones notified us that Evan’s daughter Emily Jones presented them with a second grandchild on May 31stAnna Elizabeth Mowry weighed in at 7 lb 4 oz and daddy Steve Mowry and 4-year-old brother Anthony are very excited.  Emily’s brother, Adam, a 22-year-old student at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, thinks it’s pretty cool that Niece Anna was born on his own birthday.

Other Celebrations

The Morriston Orpheus Choir and singer Gwawr Edwards represented Wales at a May 12th ceremony celebrating the completion of the UK leg of a multibillion-pound (£) energy project.  The Queen, Prince Philip and the Duke of York and members of the Royal Family of the Arabian state of Qatar were in attendance at the event in Milford Haven, West Wales.  More information and pictures can be found at http://www.morristonorpheus.com/home.php?page_id=207.

Sick Bay

At our St. David’s Day post-luncheon program, Feb. 28, the unofficial policy was evidently “The show must go on!”  Ann Gillard, director of the Columbus Welsh Singing Society, was in a car wreck the day before and conducted Cwm Rhondda  on the 28th with broken ribs. John Davids, accompanist for the CWSS, entertained us with a number of piano selections and then was laid low the next day with bronchial flu.

Megg Hukill has been going through a series of lumbar injections in an effort to alleviate a problem with her leg.

After chemo treatments for breast cancer, Pam Jones underwent surgery in mid-May.

We’re happy that Ann and John are back on the Healthy List and hope that both Megg and Pam join them soon.

On the Move

Carolyn and Weldon Abels, founders of the Welsh folk dance group, spent a month in Taiwan teaching English at Chung Yuan Christian University, a 20,000-student campus in Chung Li City.  While there at the invitation of Logos Seminary, Carolyn also helped graduate students and faculty in a writing clinic and she and Weldon led a conversational workshop and assisted at the seminary with the Saturday-night worship service.  They were sorry to miss WSCO’s St. David’s Day celebrations but enjoyed their great experience and are excited to have been invited for a longer stay next year.
