NINNAU & Y Drych is the result of the merger in November 2003 of Ninnau, then the North American Welsh Newspaper, and Y Drych, the oldest Welsh newspaper in the Americas. Now united as one newspaper, NINNAU & Y Drych is dedicated to preserving and enhancing the vitality of the North American Welsh community.
Annual subscriptions (6 issues) are only $20 U.S. dollars, $27 Canadian dollars, or £16 British pounds. Send your name and address to Ninnau Publications Inc., 11 Post Terrace, Basking Ridge, NJ 07920, USA or subscribe online at http://ninnau.com.
Welsh Country Magazine: “the pan Wales magazine that is essential reading for those that are passionate about the countryside of Wales, Welsh food, Welsh property and the history of Wales.”
Their hard-copy subscription of £17+ with a non-UK mailing fee of £7+ tacked on seems a bit hefty but the sample articles I’ve seen about the villages and towns were very nicely done. You can find on their website summaries of some of the articles, news from around Wales, recipes, and links to other sites – www.welshcountry.co.uk.
Sportingwales claims to be the “most widely distributed sports magazine in Wales … available through an extensive network of hotels, health clubs, leisure centres, sports venues, golf clubs and university campuses” and you can read it free online. Pop in to http://sportingwales.net to check out the most recent issue and, if you choose, subscribe to receive future issues via email.
Editor’s Note: I would like to hear about books you’ve read by Welsh authors or with Welsh themes. Send a short review by regular mail to Dragon Tales, WSCO, P.O. Box 12023, Columbus, OH, 43212, or email to dragontalesnews(at)sbcglobal(dot)net. Please include your name and contact information in case I have questions.

A Celtic voyage departed on May 9 at 8 pm from the sanctuary of the Trinity Episcopal Church on the corner of Broad and Third streets in downtown Columbus.
The musical voyage was hosted by the Magpie Consort, “an ensemble of 18 voices with an adventurous approach to repertoire and performance”, wound its way through Scotland and Ireland to Wales and ended in Appalachia, and was led by Sheena Phillips, Artistic Director, a choral director and composer who moved to Columbus from the UK in 2000.
The “stop in Wales” included: Suo Gân (Lullaby); Cariad Pur Ffyddion (Faithful True Love) a medley that included Ar Lan Y Môr (Down by the Sea), Y Deryn Pur (The Gentle Bird), Mae ‘Nghariad i’n Fenws (My Sweetheart’s like Venus), Bugeillo’r Gwenith Gwyn (Watching the White Wheat), and Gwenno Penygelli (Gwen of Penygelli); and closed with Cwm Rhondda (The Rhondda Valley). The pieces were sung partly in Welsh and partly in English and were performed well.
The tribute to Wales in the Appalachia leg of the journey was Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah (to us, Cwm Rhondda) sung in the manner of a “traditional Kentucky version”.
We do our best to plan ahead for WSCO events so members have plenty of notice – our annual events are announced in this newsletter. But occasionally the opportunity comes up quickly for something special – as did the April 2008 and 2009 events with the Trinity exchange students – and an email notice was sent out.
If you’ve never received an email message with the subject “From WSCO of possible interest”, then we may not have your email address. If you want to receive email notices from WSCO, please write to info(at)welshsocietyofcentralohio(dot)org (let us know if you prefer that your address not be published in the annual Member Roster).
Although we send out periodic email messages with news of Welsh-oriented events that may be of interest to our members, we do not flood your inbox.
For those with no email or who access your messages somewhere other than your own home (maybe the library or a relative’s house), we are thinking of starting a telephone tree for only short-notice WSCO-sponsored events. We can’t make any promises at this time – it’s only an option under consideration. We’ll keep you updated.
