2008 WSCO Gymanfa Director

Ann Price Gillard was born and raised in the Welsh community of Radnor, Ohio. Her father was full-blooded Welsh and her mother three-fourth Welsh.  She was taught from early childhood the importance of her Welsh heritage. Music has always been an important part of Ann’s life and she has many memories of her grandmother singing Welsh hymns and of the 4-part singing in the Congregational church.

Ann started studying piano and voice when she was seven years old and sang on radio shows at age 9. After high school, while working as a legal secretary in Delaware, Ohio, she studied voice and organ at Ohio Wesleyan University.

After marrying Jim and having three children, Ann gave organ and piano lessons, and did vocal coaching for 25 years. She also directed children’s choirs and was Directress of Music for Job’s Daughters.

After her children were grown, Ann continued her musical education by attending choral workshops, Chautauquas and choral Elderhostels. For the past 13 years, Ann and Jim have entertained with musical programs at nursing homes, adult day care centers and Alzheimer hospitals throughout central Ohio. Last year they were honored with an award from Governor Strickland for Outstanding Volunteerism.

For the past 5 years Ann has directed the 54 voice G-Clef Chorus of the Gillie Senior Recreation Center and since January 2006 has directed the Columbus Welsh Singing Society.

Ann has tried throughout her life to bring the joy of music to as many people as possible and to help people of Welsh descent honor their heritage.

Only $5.00!!

WSCO has about two dozen copies of the first (probably) Welsh Hymns for English Singers – the phonetic version of many of your favorite hymns – published by the Gymanfa Ganu Association of the United States and Canada, Inc. (that was the WNGGA’s name at the time).

How does it compare to the Welsh Hymns for Non-Welsh Singers, [Phonetic Edition for 1995 Reformatted Hymnal] published in 2001?  Both have no music, just the lyrics, with the Welsh lyrics in black and the phonetic pronunciation beneath in red, and this older version has no index.

New version -- $11.00, old version only $5.00; new version – over 118 tunes, old version – 79 tunes BUT it contains most of the old favorites, exactly because they are old favorites.

If you’d like to have the phonetic pronunciation for some of the most often sung hymns but don’t have, or don’t want to purchase, the 2001 edition then this is the perfect compromise.  We will have them for sale at the October 19, 2008, Te Bach.

First come, first served.  No “reservations” or “holds.”  Any remaining copies will be offered for sale at our St. David’s Day event.
