       2008 --  Celebrate WSCO’s 60th Year!

60th Gymanfa Ganu to be Held October 19th

Mary Ellen Morgan

The Welsh Society of Central Ohio's 60th annual gymanfa ganu will be held at Central College Presbyterian Church on Sunday, October 19, 2008, at 2:30 p.m. with an organ concert beginning at 2:15.

This year's celebrated performers, all from the Central College Presbyterian Church, are the Reverend Malcolm Scott Davis, the newly appointed Senior Minister, who is a tenor; the Reverend Monty Clearman, and David Meulenberg, adult choir director. The men are putting together an exciting program for us.

Our own Ann Price Gillard, director of WSCO’s Columbus Welsh Singing Society, will be conducting the gymanfa and has instituted a change in the printed program. She will be including which verses will be sung in Welsh and which in English to make it easier for us to know how to follow.

This is Ann's celebration of her Welsh roots, and her years of conducting experience along with her energy and enthusiasm promise to make this a memorable event.

"Official" WSCO organist and newly wed Jim Hildreth will accompany us on the organ, as he has done for years.  Because October 19 is also the official date of the "World's Largest Organ Recital," part of a year-long event called the International Year of the Organ sponsored by the American Guild of Organists, and because there will be organ concerts performed all over the world that day to heighten public awareness of the "King of Instruments," Jim will play a very special piece for the occasion. He has selected Concert Fantasia on a Welsh March (Gorhoffedd Gwyr  Harlech) by William T. Best. If you would like to hear this grand piece in its entirety and help celebrate this special day, please arrive by 2:15.

Besides playing for WSCO gymanfa and St. David’s Day events, Jim is the Organist of the Broad Street Presbyterian Church in Columbus, Ohio, and has performed with the Columbus Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.  He is a private teacher of organ and piano and has taught courses at Capital University, in addition to giving solo organ recitals.

There will be a few hymnals for loan during the gymanfa.

You are invited to join us in Ballard Hall immediately following the gymanfa for a complimentary te bach, or “little tea,” where our celebration of WSCO’s 60th Year will continue.
