Maternity Ward

Mary Ellen Morgan forwarded a note from Kara Lewis (former director of the Madog Center for Welsh Studies at the University of Rio Grande):

“Baby Morgan Towy Jones was born at 7:24 AM on Wednesday 21st May.  He weighed 9lbs 1oz, and is gorgeous!

Tarian seems to like "babi" unless Dadi is holding him, and then it's tantrum-time!

I'm doing well, can't believe he's here!”

WSCO sends congratulations to Kara and her husband, Graham Jones.

In May, WSCO members Bob and Sue Ranck celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary at Niagara Falls.  They traveled there via Myrtle Beach, S.C. – a long trip to celebrate their long and happy marriage.

Having been married to his late wife, Joann, for 39 years, and then to his second wife, Mary Ellen Morgan, for 16 years, Bob Donaldson has been married for a total of 55 years, but with no Golden Wedding Anniversary party to show for it.  So, on their May 23rd anniversary, Mary Ellen gave a surprise 55th anniversary party for Bob.  The party was at their place of employment for 150 of Bob's new 'best friends', and was a total surprise to him.  It seems that Mary Ellen's new math was a hit with Bob.

Joe Speakman, son of Joe and Sue, grandson of Peggy and Joe, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Astronautical Engineering with a minor in Philosophy and a commission as a Second Lieutenant with the 50th graduating class of the United States Air Force Academy on May 28, 2008.   Among his honors are induction into the National Honoraries of Sigma Gamma Tau for Aerospace Engineering and Tau Beta Pi for General Engineering, and graduating with academic distinction in the top 15% of a class of 1012 cadets. Family members made the trip to Colorado Springs for this momentous occasion and returned with pictures of Joe shaking hands with President Bush.

Joe’s first assignment will be at the Los Angeles Air Force Base in California.  He will be working with satellites in the Space and Missile System Center.

As if this wasn’t enough excitement, Joe was married to Laura Rivera, his high school sweetheart, in an outdoor ceremony on June 21st. (see “Going to the Chapel” section)

Adding to the May/June whirl of events, Laura graduated from the honors program at The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science in Economics and a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations.

Jim Gillard will be celebrating his 80th birthday on July 30th.  Jim, penblywdd hapus i ti!!

Llongyfarchiadau (congratulations) to each of you!

Sick Bay

The Speakman household out in Pickerington has been dealing with health issues the past few months.  Peggy had eye surgery in March and Joe, Sr. missed grandson Joe’s graduation at the end of May.  We hope Peggy has healed and that the tests have given the answer to what needs to be done to get Joe on the mend.

Thursday, June 12th was the date of Bob Donaldson’s total left knee replacement surgery, and he came through with flying colors and was home recuperating by Saturday.  If memory serves your editor correctly, the right knee has already been done so we can expect to see Bob kicking up his heels with the Welsh dancers at the 2009 picnic (6 weeks from surgery to the 2008 picnic is too soon to expect him to be fully recovered).

On the Move

In early May, Stanton and Charlotte Prior visited their daughter, Amy Littler, and grandsons, L.J. (Lawrence Joseph IV) and Graham in Marblehead. Massachusetts.  L.J.’s sixth grade class put on a children’s version of “The Music Man” Thursday and Friday before Mother’s Day.  L.J. played the part of Professor Harold Hill on Thursday night and was in the chorus Friday night.
