WSCO’s 2007 Gymanfa Ganu

Mary Ellen Morgan

The music of heaven filled Central College Presbyterian Church on Sunday, October 21, 2007, when the Welsh Society of Central Ohio had its 59th annual Gymanfa Ganu.

Masterfully conducted by Thomas A. Lloyd, the congregation sang more verses in Welsh than in recent memory.  Mr. Lloyd's scholarly approach to the history of the hymns and the technical aspects of the proper way to sing them made us all sound better than we expected.  Heard through out the congregation were outstanding voices from all sections, tenor, bass, soprano, and alto, and they made the event sound like cymanfoedd of old at the Miami Avenue Presbyterian Church.

Tom got a great deal from the congregation, and all who sang enjoyed themselves.  Ann Gillard, of the Columbus Welsh Singing Society, had thoughtfully provided fifty sheets of phonetic words for those who needed help, but the demand far exceeded the supply, especially for those who were first time gymanfa attendees.

Tenor soloist, Bob O'Brien, Brynele, a cousin of many WSCO members, delighted the congregation with his beautiful voice and Welsh singing of Unwaith Eto'ng Nghymru Annwyl, Arafa Don, Myfanwy, and many others.  He was kind enough to have the first shipment of his newly released CD shipped to Columbus for his first viewing of it, and made them available after the program.

President Homer Williams, MD, presided over the entire event with humor, graciousness, and glee, and made everyone feel quite at home.

Many thanks to Myron Cherry for making sure that all was arranged with Central College Presbyterian Church for our comfort and program.

After the vigorous singing, we were served a beautiful te bach by Chair Donna Boyce and her many helpers.  The lovely tea cakes, brownies, cookies, tea sandwiches, nuts, and other tasty morsels were greatly appreciated after several hours of singing one's best.

No one is quite aware of the intense work it takes to get food donations and people to keep the platters and punchbowl filled, to set up and to clean up after the event, and Donna did another masterful job.

WSCO members owe many thanks to Mary Ellen Morgan who chaired the entire gymanfa, making sure that programs, signs and songbooks were available in addition to making the arrangements for conductor, organist, special music, and the memorial service.
