WELSH BUS TOUR - Sat., Oct 6, 2007 – seats still available!!

Come along with us on the Granville and Welsh Hills area day trip – when this newsletter went to the printer there were still about a dozen seats left – we can put YOUR name on one! The tentative schedule for the tour was published in the last issue of Dragon Tales and can be found on page 1.

Update from Ken Evans

Carol Philipps and her sister, Janet, are just back from 2 weeks in Wales where they attended the National Eisteddfod and also learned more about their Philipps and Rees ancestors who founded the Welsh Hills settlement in 1802. Those folks with us on the bus will be among the first recipients of this extended Welsh history.

Also, Menna Morgan of the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth will be on the tour with us. She is in Ohio as the project officer for the Wales-Ohio Project -- http://ohio.llgc.org.uk. (See article in last Dragon Tales, page 9, bottom)

Reservations are needed – the cost is $40 and a variety of drinks will be provided.  Bring your own lunch – when we scheduled our trip we were unaware that it was the same weekend as the Denison University parents’ visitation and all the restaurants will be super busy.

Please plan to arrive at the bus by 8:50 am so we can be settled and leave at 9:00 am sharp. We leave from the parking lot behind the Worthington United Methodist Church, 600 North High Street in Worthington, OH. This is in the 2nd block south of Rt. 161/Dublin Granville Rd. on the east side of High Street. It is just south of a BP service station and the Masonic Lodge that are in the same block.

Don’t miss out -- make your reservations with:                                                                                                                    Bob Donaldson (614) 488-0007, email Wirefoxes3[at]aol[dot]com.

WSCO Annual Picnic, 2007

Charlotte Prior

Our picnic, the 21st of July, was blessed with comfortable weather and we had four dozen WSCO members and friends in attendance.  Blendon Woods is beautiful and we were deep in the trees in the oldest, most remote shelter house.

We ate first so the many delicious dishes would still be hot or cold.  My, what a selection!  You all outdid yourselves – so many temptations!  (Editor’s Note: see recipe on this page)

Homer Williams, aided by Tegwyn Lantz and Donna Boyce, showed his auctioneering skills with items from The Welsh Store and raised over $150 for WSCO.  Many thanks to Dianne Williams who donated to the auction a cookbook titled “Living in Cin-namon” that she compiled and published with a group of her friends, The Spice Ladies – it was a great hit.

Next, Ann Gillard led the Columbus Welsh Singing Society in some favorites, with John Davids accompanying on the keyboard.  Then everyone was urged to join in singing.

Thanks to Donna Boyce and her dancers, Linda Franklin, Patti Jones and Barb Perry, who demonstrated several Welsh country dances.  Some of us participated in a couple easy, simple dances.

Thanks, also, to Roger Roberts for bringing his collection of flags, maps and Welsh paraphernalia.

Any suggestions for next year’s picnic would be appreciated.  Contact Charlotte, (614) 470-4999.

2007 Picnic Recipe

Several people at the picnic asked for Mary Klipfel’s sweet potato casserole recipe.  Mary says that this recipe came from The LaComedia Dinner Theatre in Springboro, Ohio.  Diolch to Mary for sharing the recipe!

Sweet Potato Soufflé

Casserole:

4 cups mashed sweet potatoes (40 oz. can drained)        1/2 tsp. salt

1 cup sugar                                                                    1/3 stick butter or margarine (melted)

2 eggs                                                                            1 tsp. vanilla

1/2 cup milk

Mix well. Pour into buttered pan.

Topping:

1 cup brown sugar                                                          1/3 cup butter or margarine (melted)

1/2 cup flour                                                                   1 cup pecans

Crumble topping evenly over potato mixture.

Bake at 350 for 35-45 minutes, uncovered.

Take to the WSCO picnic.  (the Editor added that last instruction)
